Mountain View Counseling of North Ogden

Life is Hard

Three simple words that are at the root of why people seek out therapists.

women

While some people can see the benefit of counseling to work through the emotional and mental struggles we all face at times, for others, it feels like they are admitting to weakness–an inability to handle their own problems. I understand that. I used to be that person. As a former Army Officer and military spouse, as well as the mother of 3 soldiers, I have some insight into the ‘tough it out’ and ‘rub some dirt on it and it will be fine’ mentality. If you or your loved one question whether therapy can make a difference in overcoming the struggles in your lives, I would encourage you to come and talk with me. Perhaps I can help you see things differently.

I believe that the vast majority of people are doing the best they can in life. When our thoughts, words, and actions aren’t in sync with our values or expectations of ourselves, that’s often when we find ourselves experiencing some sort of distress–depression, anxiety, etc. Sometimes we seek to avoid those distressing feelings by engaging in behaviors that make us feel good for a time (but are often problematic in the long run) or by funneling those painful feelings into emotions that make us feel more powerful or in control, such as anger.

Sometimes the distress we are experiencing comes from something else. Sometimes it is recent or past trauma that continues to affect how we see and interact with the world around us. As a trauma-certified therapist, I can help you retrain your body and brain to let go of the fight, flight, or freeze responses that characterize the need for self-protection even when no danger is present.

We only have control over our own mental and emotional responses, even if it seems that others' actions are to blame for our feelings of distress.  I find great joy in working with others as they sort through that complex tangle of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in order to come to a resolution–figuring out together how to move forward in a manner that brings them peace.

We All Struggle. It’s Okay to Ask for Help.

“Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light” this quote by Brene Brown perfectly encapsulates life. Life is not without suffering. Be it a past trauma, a devastating breakup, family problems or addiction, we all struggle in some form or another. Often, we neglect these problems and their impact on us--we try to ignore and suppress them. However, this act of neglect and suppression eventually creeps up on us, and as a result we find ourselves the victim of unhealthy behaviors and emotions such as anger, substance abuse, behavioral addiction, and more.

As Brene said, we have to be brave in exploring our darkness. In order to heal ourselves from our suffering, we must confront the cause. Is there a way to heal emotional and mental suffering? Absolutely. Will it be difficult? Probably. What’s wrong with toughing it out? Everything. As a former Army Officer, military spouse, and mother of three soldiers, I know firsthand about toughing it out. It’s generally not a good idea to suppress your emotions, especially if you find yourself involved in unhealthy behaviors. If you feel like you have fallen  into substance or behavior addiction or can’t seem to move on from past traumas, give me a chance to help you.

We all experience life uniquely, even if experiences and problems seem similar to others. As a trauma-certified therapist, I can help you find the clarity that you are desperately seeking. I have significant experience working with clients who thought therapy wasn’t a solution for them. If you or your loved one thinks that therapy won’t work, let’s talk. My name is Candice “Candi” Child-Illum, and I love helping clients find answers to their problems. Let’s connect so that you can start your healing journey.
